Tamil Nadu Train Accident: What Led The Mysuru-Darbhanga Express Mishap?

In a disturbing replay of the Balasore train disaster, the Mysuru-Darbhanga Express collided with a stationary goods train at Kavarapettai, Tamil Nadu, due to an alleged loop line signal failure. The accident, which occurred around 8:30 PM, left several passengers injured and disrupted rail services in the region. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported.

The Mysuru-Darbhanga Express (Train No. 12578) had just passed Ponneri station and was approaching Kavarapettai Railway Station when it encountered a severe jerk. Though it had a green signal to proceed on the mainline, the train unexpectedly veered onto the loop line at a speed of 75 km/h, colliding with a parked goods train. The impact caused the derailment of 12-13 coaches, and a parcel van near the engine caught fire but was quickly extinguished.

Tamil Nadu Train Accident What Caused The Mysuru-Darbhanga Express Mishap

The proximity of the station allowed for a swift emergency response. Rescue operations were launched immediately, with injured passengers being taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Both UP and DOWN train movement on the affected route were suspended as recovery efforts continued.

Parallels to the Balasore Tragedy

This accident draws chilling comparisons to the June 2023 Balasore train disaster in Odisha, where a similar loop line error led to a catastrophic collision between the Coromandel Express and a stationary goods train, resulting in the deaths of nearly 300 people. In both cases, signal mismanagement and incorrect routing onto loop lines were the root causes of the accidents.

A medical relief van, ambulances, and rescue teams from Chennai Central were quickly dispatched to the scene. While some passengers were treated on-site, others were taken to hospitals for further care. Railway officials have been closely monitoring the situation, with alternative travel arrangements being made for stranded passengers.

What is a Loop Line?

A loop line in railway terms is a secondary track running parallel to the mainline, allowing trains to pass or wait while others overtake. While loop lines are designed to ease traffic congestion at busy stations, mismanagement of signals, as seen in both the Mysuru-Darbhanga and Balasore incidents, can lead to fatal accidents.
