Dilip Kumar, the Executive Director of Information & Publicity at the Railway Board, provided insights into the response efforts. He mentioned, "Information has been received about the accident of 12578 Bagmati Express. So far, the relief and rescue team from the railway has reached the accident site and the work of evacuating passengers from all the coaches is going on.

More than 90% of the passengers have been evacuated. We have not received any information of any casualty or serious injury so far. Both the relief team and the medical team are present at the accident site. GM Sadan Railway and DRM Sadan Chennai Division have left for the accident site. Necessary arrangements are being made by the railway from Chennai station to take the rest of the passengers to their destination..."

The detailed account from the Indian Railways sheds light on the sequence of events leading to the collision. The train passed Ponneri station at approximately 20:27 hrs, receiving a green signal for continuation through Kavaraipettai on the mainline.

However, a significant jerk was felt by the train crew, causing the train to deviate into the Loop/line at 75 kmph, where it collided with the goods train. Remarkably, the crew remained unharmed, and a subsequent fire in the parcel van was quickly extinguished by the fire brigade.

While there have been reports of injuries, no fatalities have been confirmed. The injured were rushed to nearby medical facilities, and train movement in the UP/DOWN direction was suspended.

In addition to the official rescue operations, local residents, including Lokesh, who witnessed the accident, have played a crucial role in the rescue efforts. Lokesh recounted, "The exact spot is Kavarappettai. A passenger train collided with a goods train which was standing. We are the people living nearby who have come here to the rescue. Officials are also present here."

The Indian Railways' statement further elaborated on the aftermath, stating that doctors, ambulances, and medical relief vans were dispatched to the site alongside the rescue teams and senior officers. The majority of passengers have been safely evacuated, receiving necessary medical attention or being transported elsewhere as required. Alternative arrangements are also in place to assist passengers in reaching their destinations.

This incident has once again highlighted the critical importance of railway safety and the need for stringent measures to prevent such accidents in the future. It also showcases the effective coordination between various rescue and medical teams in responding to emergencies, ensuring the safety and well-being of all passengers involved.
