Tamil Nadu School Reopening Date: When Will Schools Be Reopened In The State?

The reopening of schools across Tamil Nadu, originally scheduled for June 2, may be postponed as the state continues to face an intense heatwave. Authorities have indicated that the decision will depend on prevailing weather conditions closer to the reopening date.

Will Schools Reopening Be Delayed?

Following the successful completion of Class 10, 11, and 12 board examinations, schools commenced their summer vacation from April 25. The Directorate of Government Examinations (DGE), Tamil Nadu, conducted the Class 12 board exams from March 3 to March 25, covering core subjects in Mathematics, Science, Commerce, and Humanities. Class 11 exams were held from March 5 to March 27, and Class 10 SSLC written exams took place from March 28 to April 15, following the completion of practical assessments.

For students in Classes 6 to 9, the Education Department announced the start of summer holidays from April 25, right after the conclusion of their final examinations. Teachers involved in paper evaluation and result processing are expected to wrap up their duties by April 30, marking the end of the 2024-25 academic year.

Earlier, the School Education Department had directed all government and government-aided high schools and higher secondary schools to reopen for the 2025-26 academic session on Monday, June 2. School heads were instructed to complete all preparatory work well in advance.

However, in light of the extreme summer temperatures, School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi hinted at a possible delay.

Announcement Close To The Date

"While schools are set to reopen on June 2, we will take a final call based on the weather conditions," he said, adding that the decision will be made in consultation with the Chief Minister.

In addition to the heatwave concerns, the minister also addressed private school fee regulations, warning institutions against overcharging students.

As temperatures continue to soar, the state government is expected to make a formal announcement regarding the school reopening date in the coming weeks.
