Tamil Nadu School Holidays In January 2025: Will DMK Govt Extend Pongal Break To 9 Days?

Tamil Nadu's 2025 holiday calendar is shaping up to be a delightful surprise for students and families, as the DMK government considers extending the Pongal holiday to as long as nine days.

In the recently released holiday list, the government announced 23 public holidays for 2025. January alone boasts five holidays: English New Year (January 1), Pongal (January 15), Thiruvalluvar Day (January 16), Farmers' Day (January 17), and Republic Day (January 26). However, clever alignment of these festivals with weekends may grant students an extended nine-day holiday.

9 Day Pongal Holiday In TN

Pongal Break Could Stretch to 9 Days

With Bhogi (January 13) expected to be declared a holiday and January 11 and 12 already falling on the weekend, a holiday on January 17 (Friday) could turn the festive season into a 10-day celebration.

The alignment of Pongal with weekends and additional holidays is likely to bring joy to students and employees alike, offering a rare opportunity for extended family time and travel. It mirrors the government's Diwali break strategy from October 2024, where a public holiday on October 31 was supplemented with an extra day to alleviate travel congestion.

During the Diwali celebrations, Tamil Nadu families welcomed the extra break, which allowed for a smoother travel experience. By announcing an extended break, the DMK government successfully reduced the strain on transportation systems and ensured residents could travel to their hometowns without hassle.

However, families and educational institutions eagerly await confirmation, with hopes that the extended Pongal break will add to the joy and togetherness of the festive season.
