Tamil Nadu School Holidays In 2025: Will It Be 9-Day Pongal Holiday This Time For Govt Employees?
Tamil Nadu 2025 Holidays: Tamil Nadu government employees have urged Chief Minister MK Stalin to declare January 17, 2025, a public holiday, aiming to extend the Pongal festivities into a continuous nine-day break.
Pongal Festival Date
Pongal, one of Tamil Nadu's most cherished festivals, holds deep cultural significance as families gather to celebrate traditional rituals. The festival begins with Bhogi on January 13 (Monday) and culminates with Pongal on January 14 (Tuesday). Currently, government employees enjoy a four-day holiday during this period. However, the demand for an additional holiday on January 17 (Friday) would ensure an uninterrupted stretch of holidays from January 11 (Saturday) to January 19 (Sunday).

More Time To Relax
Speaking on the matter, Thiyagarajan, coordinator of JACTO-GEO, underlined the importance of Pongal and how a longer holiday would benefit government employees, teachers, and students. He noted that this extended break would allow more time for people to visit their hometowns and celebrate with their families. A formal request to the Chief Minister is planned for the first week of January 2025.
The Pongal season is a time of unity and joy across Tamil Nadu. Many people travel to their native places to reconnect with loved ones and partake in age-old customs. An additional holiday, proponents argue, would enhance the festive spirit and provide much-needed relaxation for government staff.
The Tamil Nadu government is yet to respond to this request, but employees are hopeful that their appeal will be considered favorably.
