Tamil Nadu School Holiday: Thanjavur School To Be Remained Closed For A Week Over Teacher's Murder
The Tamil Nadu government has ordered a one-week closure of the Mallipattinam Government Higher Secondary School in Thanjavur, where a teacher was tragically stabbed to death.
School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh, after visiting the school, announced that classes will resume only after counselling sessions are conducted for both students and teachers to address their trauma.

Minister Anbil Mahesh, accompanied by Minister Govi Sezhiyan, Thanjavur Collector Priyanka Pankajam, and SP Ashish Rawat, inspected the school and met with the teaching staff. Paying tribute to the deceased teacher, Ramani, the minister assured reporters that measures would be taken to de-stress students and enhance school security by addressing public demands for guards and CCTV installations. "Steps will be taken to allay the fears of students, and strict action will be taken against the accused," he stated.
The incident involved 26-year-old teacher Ramani, who had been working at the school for four months. She was attacked in her classroom by 30-year-old Madhankumar, a former lover, whose marriage proposal she had rejected. Madhankumar, reportedly from the same village and community as Ramani, entered the classroom during a session and stabbed her in the neck with a knife. Despite immediate efforts to rush her to a hospital, Ramani was declared dead on arrival.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Madhankumar's proposal had been firmly declined by Ramani, with the support of her parents. Village elders had also warned him to leave her alone after she expressed disinterest in the relationship. Police believe this rejection led him to commit the heinous crime. The tragic event has left the community in shock, prompting calls for enhanced security measures in schools.
