The Meteorological Department has warned of extremely heavy rainfall in the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday and Wednesday, urging fishermen to stay away from the sea until October 25.

"For today and tomorrow, we have given an extremely heavy rainfall warning to the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu... Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea from 21st to 25th," said B Amudha, Director of the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, in a statement to ANI.

According to her, an upper cyclonic circulation over the South Andaman Sea and the southeast Bay of Bengal has led to the formation of a low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal early on Monday morning.

"It is likely to move northwestwards and concentrate into a depression over the southwest and adjoining west central Bay of Bengal of north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra coast by the afternoon of 22nd October, 2025," Amudha explained, adding that a second system over the southeast Arabian Sea could intensify into a deep depression in the next 24 hours.

Alert For 25 Districts

As per the latest RMC bulletin, 25 districts are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, prompting multiple alerts. A red alert has been sounded in Ramanathapuram, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, Villuppuram, and the Union Territories of Puducherry and Karaikal.

An orange alert-indicating heavy to very heavy rainfall-has been issued for Ariyalur, Perambalur, Kallakurichi, Chengalpattu, Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari, while a yellow alert covers parts of Villuppuram, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, and Mayiladuthurai, as well as adjoining Puducherry areas.

As heavy rain warnings sweep across the state, speculation has mounted over a possible holiday for schools and colleges. However, officials have clarified that no announcement has been made yet. District Collectors are expected to take a call late tonight or early Tuesday morning depending on rainfall intensity.

Also, educational institutions will remain closed in Puducherry & Karaikal on Wednesday.
