Tamil Nadu Polls: Seat Sharing to Seat Wins - Inside The Numbers of 2021 Polls

The 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly election unfolded like a grand political drama across the 234 constituencies of the state, where alliances, not just individual parties, defined the battle lines. At the heart of the contest stood two formidable blocs: the Secular Progressive Alliance led by DMK and the National Democratic Alliance anchored by AIADMK.

The numbers tell a clear story, but they need careful interpretation. While it is true that the DMK-led alliance (SPA) won 159 seats and the AIADMK-led NDA secured 75, the claim that each alliance "contested all 234 seats" is misleading. In reality, seats were divided among alliance partners.

Within the SPA, the DMK itself contested 173 seats and emerged as the dominant force, winning 133-an impressive strike rate that powered the alliance to victory. Its key ally, the Indian National Congress, contested 25 seats and won 18, playing a crucial supporting role. Other partners contributed modestly but meaningfully: Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi contested 6 seats and won 4, while both the Communist Party of India and Communist Party of India (Marxist) contested 6 seats each and secured 2 wins apiece. Smaller allies like the Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK) also contributed a couple of victories, helping the alliance reach its total of 159.

On the opposing side, the NDA alliance was led by AIADMK, which contested 179 seats and won 66. Though it remained the single largest party within its alliance, the gap with DMK proved too wide. The Pattali Makkal Katchi contested 23 seats and won 5, while the Bharatiya Janata Party contested 20 seats and secured 4 victories. Other allies, including smaller regional players, failed to make a significant impact, leaving the NDA with a total of 75 seats.

Outside these alliances, several parties attempted to disrupt the bipolar contest but found little electoral success. The Naam Tamilar Katchi contested all 234 seats, signaling ambition but winning none. Similarly, Makkal Needhi Maiam, led by actor Kamal Haasan, contested around 140 seats but failed to secure a single victory. The Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazagam also contested widely (around 165 seats) but ended without representation in the assembly.

Thus, while the headline numbers-159 for the SPA and 75 for the NDA-are accurate, the underlying structure reveals a coalition-driven contest where seat-sharing arrangements determined who contested where. The DMK's disciplined allocation and high conversion rate proved decisive, while the AIADMK-led alliance struggled to match that efficiency.
