Tamil Nadu Minister Applauding Dancers Triggers Controversy; DMK, Opposition Trade Charges

A video from a birthday celebration for Udhayanidhi Stalin in Tamil Nadu's Sivaganga district has triggered political friction, after footage showed women dancers performing onstage while state minister S. Periyakaruppan applauded from the audience. The clip quickly circulated online, prompting the BJP to accuse the ruling DMK of promoting behaviour that they say undermines Tamil culture and the dignity of women.

DMK insiders pushed back against the accusations, insisting that the performers were not invited by the minister or party organisers. According to them, the group of women approached the venue on their own and joined the event voluntarily. They also countered the criticism by alleging that similar displays have taken place during AIADMK-led functions in the past.

Opposition Sharpens Attacks

The BJP used the opportunity to broaden its criticism of the DMK, arguing that such spectacles reflect poor priorities within the government. They questioned whether political roles were being handed out on familial lines rather than ability, saying that leaders should focus on governance rather than festivities. The party also raised doubts about the ruling government's sensitivity towards women's issues.

The AIADMK amplified the BJP's attack, as its spokesperson Kovai Sathyan reminded the public of a previous controversy involving minister Periyakaruppan from nearly a decade ago. He claimed the latest video was yet another sign of what he described as the DMK leadership's troubling attitudes toward women.

The incident has intensified an already charged political climate in Tamil Nadu. Opposition parties accuse the DMK government of being distracted by celebrations while the state grapples with concerns related to law and order, corruption, and administrative inefficiencies.
