Tamil Nadu: How Important Is A Win For Annamalai In Coimbatore?
Tamil Nadu is one of the states which has been closely followed by political pundits in the Lok Sabha 2024 polls as the BJP has put in its best efforts to make inroads in the state politics.
The BJP's presence in Tamil Nadu politics has historically been negligible, failing to secure any seats in the last general elections despite a mere 3+ vote share. However, the dynamics shifted with the appointment of former IPS officer K Annamalai as the state chief.

The pre-poll surveys had predicted that the BJP, from nowhere, was predicted to take the primary opposition place and increase its vote share to double digits in 2024. However, the exit polls released on Saturday have indicated that the NDA will get double-digit vote share.
The most optimistic projection for the BJP coalition comes from India TV-CNX, which predicts between five and seven seats. India Today-Axis My India's exit poll forecasts two to four seats.
However, the Axis My India exit poll has predicted that the saffron party might bag 1-3 seats, but Annamalai was unlikely to win.
So, what this setback mean for Annamalai?

In electoral politics, a victory solidifies a leader's standing within the party, particularly in a party with strong aspirations for success. He was made the state BJP chief despite losing in the Aravakurichi assembly constituency in 2021 by 24,816 votes.
Therefore, the victory in Coimbatore is crucial for Annamalai.
Remember, the BJP had won this seat in the 1998 and 1999 Lok Sabha elections. However, it had an alliance with the AIADMK back then. In the last four elections, the Left has won this seat thrice while the AIADMK had bagged the seat in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.
A defeat here will have some impact for BJP's long-term strategy for Tamil Nadu while also impacting the morale of the cadre energized by Annamalai's leadership.
Nonetheless, a defeat in a constituency may not diminish Annamalai's standing; it could even garner sympathy and highlight his contributions. The party's sudden relevance in Tamil Nadu politics is largely attributed to his assertive approach and independent stance, which have bolstered party morale.
Annalai's impact is undeniable, with exit polls suggesting a potential increase in the BJP's vote share from 3 per cent in 2019 to over 15 per cent. This is no small achievement as the BJP is finally testing its strength in Tamil Nadu politics and aiming to take over the AIADMK's place.
