Tamil Nadu Electricity Bills To Rise: How Much Will You Pay More? Check New Tariffs
The people of Tamil Nadu are bracing for higher electricity bills as The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) has increased the power tariff by 4.83 per cent for domestic, commercial, and industrial users starting from July 1, 2024.
This hike follows the Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation-linked tariff revision approved by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) in 2022, which sets the rates for the fiscal years 2023-24 to 2026-27.

According to the revised tariff announced by the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO), the increase for domestic consumers varies between Rs 5 and Rs 40 across different categories.
The scheme offering free power up to 100 units for all domestic consumers, along with subsidies for categories such as handlooms, agriculture, and places of worship, will remain unchanged.
For the 63 lakh domestic consumers using up to 200 units every two months, the maximum increase will be Rs 5 per month.

Similarly, for the 35 lakh domestic users consuming up to 300 units over two months, the maximum monthly increase will be Rs 15.
Consumers using 400 units and 500 units over two months will face revised tariffs of Rs 25 and Rs 40 per month, respectively.

Industries, both low and high transmission, will see their tariff adjusted to 35 paise per unit.
Additionally, consumption exceeding 1,000 units will now cost Rs 11.80 per unit, up from Rs 11.25. Tariffs for common service connections in apartments and multi-tenement buildings have been raised from Rs 8.15 per unit to Rs 8.55 per unit, while fixed charges have increased from Rs 102 per kW to Rs 107.

The revised tariff rates have sparked a wave of concern among various stakeholders, who fear the economic ripple effects. Many are calling for immediate government intervention to alleviate the financial pressures on vulnerable sectors. The state government's ability to address these concerns remains a crucial factor in the coming months, as the community watches closely for any measures to mitigate the impact of the hike.
