Tamil Nadu Dam Levels (July 19): Water Level Rises In Many Reservoirs

Water levels in most dams across Tamil Nadu have seen a significant rise over the past 24 hours, following heavy rainfall in various parts of the state on Friday, July 19.

According to data from the agriculture department, water levels have increased in all major dams, including Aliyar, Amaravathi, Bhavanisagar, Krishnagiri, and Mettur.

Tamil Nadu's extensive network of dams is crucial for managing the state's water resources. These engineering marvels are essential for meeting the region's water supply needs, providing drinking water, and generating electricity.

The state is home to 116 large dams, with 78 operated and maintained by the Tamil Nadu Water Resources Department (TNWRD). Key structures like the Mettur Dam on the Cauvery River and the Vaigai Dam at the Western Ghats are vital for agriculture, power generation, and water supply.

Although there have been occasional disputes, the Mullaperiyar Dam remains central to Tamil Nadu's water security. These dams are instrumental in regulating river flows, managing floods and droughts, and contributing significantly to the state's socio-economic development by facilitating irrigation, providing drinking water, and generating hydropower.
