Tamil Nadu: 9,000-Year-Old Ancient Cave Paintings Discovered

A remarkable discovery in the Yelagiri hills of Tamil Nadu has thrilled archaeologists. Ancient cave paintings, believed to be from the Neolithic era, have been found. These artworks provide a rare insight into the lives and rituals of early humans. The paintings, depicting scenes of people interacting with animals and celebrating victories, offer a vivid glimpse into their social and spiritual practices.

Local visitors first noticed unusual markings in a natural cave at Reddiyur. They informed scholars from Sacred Heart College, prompting an investigation. Professor Prabhu, a historian and archaeologist, led a team to the site alongside District Forest officials. The team was amazed by the extent and preservation of these ancient artworks.

Significance of the Discovery

The cave is situated nearly 1,000 feet above sea level and spans about 100 square meters. It contains around 80 figures of humans and animals painted with a mysterious white substance that has withstood time. "This natural cave is nearly 1,000 feet above sea level and contains paintings that closely resemble Neolithic drawings, suggesting they date between 10,000 and 3,000 BCE," Professor Prabhu explained.

Professor Prabhu highlighted the importance of this find as it is the first significant cluster of cave paintings discovered in the district. The site likely served as both a dwelling and a place of worship due to its elevated position and spiritual artwork. This suggests that it may have housed a community of ancient hunter-gatherers.

Preservation Concerns

Despite the excitement surrounding this discovery, there are concerns about vandalism. Some paintings have already been damaged by recent visitors. Professor Prabhu urged authorities to take immediate action to protect this invaluable heritage for future generations.

The discovery is expected to attract further archaeological interest. It could shed new light on prehistoric cultures in southern India, underscoring Yelagiri's significance as an ancient human activity center.
