South States Deserve Justice, Not Punishment: Thalapathy Vijay On Delimitation Plans

Actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) founder Thalapathy Vijay has released a detailed statement addressing the contentious issue of parliamentary constituency delimitation, which has sparked intense debate in Tamil Nadu over the past 10 days. The ruling DMK has been vocal in criticizing the Centre's possible plans, and now Vijay has added his voice, calling for justice and equitable representation for southern states.

Key Points from Vijay's Statement:

Population-Based Delimitation Unfair to Southern States:

Vijay highlighted the risk of southern states like Tamil Nadu losing parliamentary seats if constituency delimitation is carried out solely based on population. He pointed out that Tamil Nadu and other southern states have effectively controlled population growth through consistent investments in education, healthcare, and family planning over the last five decades. Penalizing these efforts with reduced parliamentary representation would be unjust and unacceptable.

The statement read, "Delimitation based solely on population metrics poses a significant risk to the southern states, including Tamil Nadu. These states have made remarkable progress in population control through investments in education, healthcare, and family planning over the past five decades. Punishing these states by reducing their parliamentary representation due to their success in population management is unjust and undemocratic."

Equal Representation vs. Federal Balance:

The actor emphasized the need to balance the constitutional principle of equal population representation for each MP with the federal principle of equal representation for each state. He urged that both democratic ideals should be implemented without disproportionately affecting any region.

"If delimitation is conducted based on the latest population census, the southern states could face a drastic reduction in their parliamentary seats. This would exacerbate the existing disparity, where states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar already have a disproportionately high number of MPs. TVK firmly opposes any move that further marginalizes the southern states in the Lok Sabha. Such a step would undermine the federal structure and democratic principles of the country," the statement read.

Suspension of Delimitation Like in the US:

Drawing parallels with the United States, where the House of Representatives has been fixed at 435 members since 1929, Vijay proposed that the number of parliamentary seats allocated to each state based on the 1971 census should be indefinitely extended to prevent unfair redistribution.

Questioning the Need for More MPs:

Vijay questioned the Union Government's possible long-term plan of increasing the total number of Lok Sabha seats. He argued that increasing MPs would not address pressing public issues like unemployment, inflation, and lack of infrastructure. Instead, he suggested that MPs should use digital and AI technologies to connect more effectively with their constituents.

Demand for Electoral Reforms and Autonomy:

He called for greater transparency in the appointment of Election Commissioners and the judiciary, ensuring these bodies function without political interference. Vijay also advocated for autonomy and financial independence for states, stating that empowering states would strengthen India's federal structure.

Election Commission: Election Commissioners must be appointed through a consensus-based process to ensure impartiality. The Chief Election Commissioner, who plays a key role in the Delimitation Commission, must be beyond reproach.

Judiciary: Transparency in the appointment of Supreme Court and High Court judges is essential to maintain the integrity of the judiciary, which is a critical pillar of democracy.

Media and Investigative Agencies: The media must operate freely without fear or favor, and agencies like the CBI, ED, and IT must function independently, free from political interference.

Safeguarding Democracy:

Vijay asserted that the media, investigative agencies, and law enforcement bodies should be free from political influence to uphold democracy. He criticized the practice of politically motivated fund distribution to states, urging the Union Government to adopt a non-partisan approach.
