Science Is The Way To Progress: Stalin On Controversial Spiritual Lecture In Tamil Nadu Schools

Following widespread criticism over a controversial 'Spiritual Awakening Class' conducted at a government school in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister MK Stalin has emphasized the need for ethical living and scientific thinking to be instilled in students. His comments come in the wake of a session led by a speaker named Mahavishnu that has sparked significant backlash.

The controversy began when Mahavishnu was invited to deliver a lecture on "Self-confidence" to students. However, the session took an unexpected turn as Mahavishnu deviated from the topic and focused heavily on spiritual themes. During his speech, he claimed that "Gurukulams were systematically destroyed by the British" and suggested that ancient practices like reading mantras could cause "fire rain," heal the body, and even enable a person to fly. He blamed British rule for the loss of such "secrets" that were once inscribed on palm leaves.

Mahavishnu further sparked controversy by stating, "If God was kind, everyone should be born equal. One is born rich while the other is born poor. One is born a criminal while the other is born a hero. Why such differences? What you did in your last birth, you were given this birth." His comments implied that individuals' current lives were shaped by their actions in past lives, which many found objectionable.

A school staff member intervened during the lecture, objecting to the speaker's comments and reminding him that he had been invited for a motivational talk, not a spiritual discourse. This led to a heated argument, with Mahavishnu accusing the staff member of having "ego issues."

The incident drew widespread condemnation, prompting a response from Chief Minister MK Stalin. Addressing the controversy, Stalin underscored that Tamil Nadu's high-quality textbooks already contain the best scientific ideas that students need to learn. He emphasized that teachers are more than capable of imparting the knowledge required to face future challenges with confidence and developing students' critical thinking skills.

Stalin announced that the School Education Department would take steps to provide innovative training and social education with the help of experts and scholars. "I have decreed to formulate and issue new guidelines for regulating various programs in schools in the state so that all our school children, who are the future generation of Tamil Nadu, get progressive-scientific ideas and lifestyles," he stated.

The Chief Minister reiterated the importance of promoting individual progress, ethical living, and sound ideas for social development among students. "Over the past three years, I have consistently emphasized the importance of education and the need to develop scientific thinking at numerous events. Science is the way to progress!" Stalin declared.
