Speaking in the Legislative Assembly yesterday, Chief Minister Vijay put speculation to rest. He confirmed that four flagship initiatives introduced by the outgoing government will continue without interruption.

These schemes have become lifelines for thousands of families, particularly women and students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Monthly Cash Support for Women Continues
The Magalir Urimai Thogai scheme, which provides ₹1,000 monthly assistance to women, remains active. The programme has been widely credited with improving financial independence among female heads of households across the state.

Student Stipends Protected Under New Rule
Perhaps the most eagerly awaited announcement concerned education support. The Pudhumai Penn and Tamizh Pudhalvan schemes - offering ₹1,000 monthly to students pursuing higher education - will carry on.

Under these initiatives, students who completed Classes 6 to 12 in government schools receive direct financial aid once enrolled in colleges, ITIs, diplomas or degree programmes.

Free Bus Travel for Women Unchanged
The Vidiyal Payana Thittam, which grants free bus travel to women across Tamil Nadu, will also remain in force. The scheme has proved vital for daily commuters, particularly those travelling to work, college or markets.

Spotlight on Pudhumai Penn: How It Works
The Pudhumai Penn scheme, formally known as the Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammaiyar Higher Education Assurance Scheme, targets girls from government institutions. Beneficiaries receive ₹1,000 credited directly to their bank accounts each month.

The programme aims to boost female enrolment in higher education, reduce dropout rates, and discourage child marriage. It supports roughly six lakh girls annually, with a budget of ₹698 crore. Debit cards have already been issued to over 600 students in the initial phase.

Eligibility and Application Process
To qualify, applicants must be Tamil Nadu residents, female students enrolled in Classes 6 to 12 at government schools or government-aided higher education institutions.

Students cannot apply directly. Instead, they must register through their school or college principal. Registration camps have been held, but late applicants can approach their institution's head for assistance. Online applications are processed via the Penkalvi portal using institute login credentials.

Required documents include Aadhaar or voter ID, residence proof, transfer certificate, and a parent's mobile number.

Applications for the Pudhumai Penn scheme cannot be submitted directly by students. Instead, all applications must be processed through the student's school, college, or educational institution.

The government previously organised registration camps for girl students until 11 November 2022. During these camps, students were required to submit their personal details and supporting documents to their respective institutions.

What if you missed the registration camp?

Girl students who were unable to register during the official camp period can still apply. They should contact their college or school principal directly to express their interest in the scheme.
