PM Modi Government Puts Tamil on the Global Map Like Never Before

In a historic move, the Narendra Modi-led central government has elevated Tamil language, culture, and heritage to global prominence. Through a series of cultural, educational, and symbolic initiatives, the government has ignited a renewed sense of pride among Tamils both in India and abroad.

Tamil Language Gains Global Momentum

The Modi government has rolled out focused efforts to amplify Tamil identity worldwide. Prime Minister Modi has consistently highlighted Tamil's antiquity and literary richness on international platforms such as the United Nations and G20 summits. Quoting revered Tamil poets, he has projected Tamil as one of the oldest surviving languages.

In a groundbreaking step, Tamil language teaching programs have been launched in countries like Fiji-a move seen for the first time in over 80 years with direct support from the Indian government.

The central government has enabled medical education in Tamil, allowing students to study complex medical subjects in their mother tongue. Tamil has also been made an option for writing various central government exams, benefitting thousands of students across the state.

Emphasis on Preserving Tamil Culture and Symbols

The government has also focused on reviving and honoring Tamil history and cultural identity.

During the inauguration of the new Parliament building, the Sengol, a sacred Tamil symbol, was installed with full national honors.

At the G20 summit, a magnificent statue of Lord Nataraja was prominently displayed, symbolizing Tamil spiritual and artistic legacy.

Efforts have also been made to spotlight legendary Tamil literary figures like Agathiyar and Thiruvalluvar, with new research, global promotion, and publications on their works.

Honoring the Chola Legacy

In a significant cultural revival, Prime Minister Modi has paid tribute to great Chola emperors Rajendra Chola and Rajaraja Chola-figures long overlooked by previous regimes. Modi has visited Gangaikonda Cholapuram, participated in religious festivities, and released a commemorative coin in honor of Rajendra Chola. He also announced plans to erect grand statues of both emperors in Tamil Nadu.

Railway Modernization: Renovation of 77 railway stations and introduction of multiple Vande Bharat Express trains.

DMK Government Under Fire for Alleged Inaction

Despite these advances, the DMK-led state government has come under criticism for its lack of alignment with central efforts.

Critics say the DMK has opposed beneficial reforms like the National Education Policy (NEP) and the three-language policy, which are designed to improve educational access and inclusivity.

There is also backlash over the alleged prioritization of dynastic figures over cultural icons. While plans are underway for a 'pen statue' for Karunanidhi, there has been no significant effort from the DMK to honor Tamil emperors like Rajendra Chola with similar gestures, say observers.

Concerns also include declining school education standards, lack of Tamil-medium professional courses, and failure to fully leverage central schemes for state development.

Through initiatives encompassing language promotion, heritage restoration, educational reform, and major infrastructure development, the Modi government is being lauded for elevating Tamil identity to unprecedented global prominence. In contrast, the DMK faces criticism for allegedly marginalising Tamil cultural icons in favor of political symbolism.

For the first time, Tamil is being seen not merely as a regional identity but as a national and global heritage-a shift many attribute to Prime Minister Modi's focused outreach.
