Parking In Chennai: Get Ready to Pay More
Chennaities will face the heat as the parking charges in the busy areas. The authorities are preparing to implement revised parking charges during rush hours, a move aimed at tackling the escalating congestion in high-demand areas.
Under the new policy, parking rates will increase during peak hours in commercial hubs, such as crowded markets and business districts. Initially targeting these areas, the policy may later extend to residential streets wider than nine meters. Streets narrower than seven meters, however, will strictly prohibit parking to ensure smoother traffic flow.

At present, the city charges Rs 20 per hour for cars and Rs 5 per hour for motorcycles, with premium spots priced at Rs 60 per hour. The upcoming changes, which the Chennai Corporation Council is expected to finalize within three weeks, aim to introduce dynamic pricing to align with demand during rush hours.
Experts see this as a step forward for urban planning in Chennai. They stress the importance of efficient parking management to alleviate traffic congestion and promote sustainable transportation. Suggestions include constructing multi-level parking facilities, adopting digital payment systems for convenience, and offering nominal fees for public transport vehicles to encourage their use.
Residents, on the other hand, express mixed feelings. While some support the idea of better-managed parking spaces, many emphasize the need for affordable rates and the expansion of parking facilities to cater to the city's growing population.
This new policy underscores Chennai's efforts to modernize its infrastructure while addressing the pressing challenges of urban mobility.
