New Speed Limit For Bike, Scooters, Cars In Chennai: Deets Inside
After two decades, the Chennai Traffic Police has announced new speed limits for two-wheelers, autorickshaws and other vehicles within the city. The new rule will come into effect from November 5.
The speed limit for cars and other light motor vehicles (LMVs) has been increased to 60kmph from 40kmph. However, when in residential areas, the maximum speed allowed for any vehicle is 30kmph.

Moreover, speed limits throughout the city will be contingent on the width of the roads. If the roads are broader, the speed limit will be higher. However, the traffic police are currently finalizing the specifics.
Light motor vehicles are restricted to a maximum speed of 60 kmph, while heavy motor vehicles are capped at 50 kmph. Two-wheelers and autorickshaws have revised speed limits of 50 kmph and 40 kmph, respectively.
Between 7 am and 10 pm, autorickshaws must adhere to a speed limit of 25 kmph, heavy motor vehicles to 35 kmph, light motor vehicles to 40 kmph, and two-wheelers to 50 kmph.
From 10 pm to 7 am, the speed limit changes to 35 kmph for autorickshaws, 40 kmph for heavy motor vehicles, and 50 kmph for light motor vehicles and two-wheelers.
The new speed limit has been introduced based on the recommendations of a six-member committee consisting of senior police officers, with inputs from IIT-Madras and the Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE), Faridabad, according to a report in The Times Of India.
However, the report, citing sources, claimed that these speed limits might go for a change based on the width of the roads and traffic density. Nonetheless, the authorities are unlikely to be increased.
