New Hosur Airport Is Just 26 KM From Bengaluru Border: Know The Location Through Google Map

In a move that could redefine regional air travel and industrial logistics, the Tamil Nadu government appears to have zeroed in on Berigai-Bagalur-just 26.2 km from Bengaluru's Attibele border-as the site for the long-awaited Hosur greenfield airport.

Nestled in Krishnagiri district, this location sits strategically on the Tamil Nadu-Karnataka border, making it a prime candidate to serve not just Hosur's booming industrial base but also the southern and eastern suburbs of Bengaluru.

The Tamil Nadu government has chosen Berigai-Bagalur, 26.2 km from Bengaluru's Attibele border, for the Hosur greenfield airport in Krishnagiri district, set to benefit commuters, business travelers, and logistics, with the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) planning to acquire 2,200 to 2,300 acres. The project requires No Objection Certificate from Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL) and Defence Ministry's approval.

Why Berigai-Bagalur Makes Sense

The Berigai-Bagalur stretch, northeast of Hosur, was locked in after an Obstacle Limitation Surface (OLS) survey favoured it over Belagondapalli, home to the private TAAL airport, Deccan Herald reported.

The site's proximity to the Tamil Nadu section of the Bengaluru Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR) adds to its appeal, promising seamless road connectivity to key Bengaluru zones like Electronic City, Sarjapur, and Whitefield.

🧑‍💼 Who Benefits in Bengaluru

Commuters & Business Travellers: For Bengalureans tired of the long haul to Kempegowda International Airport in Devanahalli, the Hosur airport could offer a faster alternative, especially for those in the southern belt.
Tech & Industrial Hubs: IT parks and manufacturing units in Bommasandra, Jigani, and Attibele stand to gain from quicker cargo and passenger movement.
Logistics & Freight: With Hosur's industrial clout and Bengaluru's tech-driven export economy, the airport could become a vital freight corridor.

"We are attaching utmost importance to the Hosur airport project. I had announced (on June 27, 2024) that we will build a world-class international airport for Hosur. TIDCO is in the process of identifying and acquiring land near Hosur for the airport. This airport, when commissioned, will put Hosur on a new path of development," Chief Minister M K Stalin said at the TN Rising Investment Conclave on Thursday.

The Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) and Krishnagiri district administration are now drafting the Land Development Plan (LDP), targeting around 2,200 to 2,300 acres. Once finalized, the plan will be sent for administrative sanction, followed by a Government Order (GO) to kick off land acquisition.

Regulatory Hurdles Ahead

The airport's proximity to Bengaluru means Tamil Nadu must secure a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL), which holds exclusive rights within a 150 km radius until 2033. Additionally, since Krishnagiri's airspace is under Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), the Defence Ministry's nod is also required.

Interestingly, Fairfax Financial Holdings, a majority stakeholder in BIAL-has shown interest in the Hosur and Chennai airports, with its Chairman Prem Watsa discussing the matter directly with CM Stalin earlier this year.

If all goes according to plan, Bengalureans could soon have a second airport option just across the state line-one that's closer, faster, and tailored to the region's industrial and tech-driven growth. Let's not forget, the Karnataka government too is preparing to build another airport in the Garden City.
