MK Muthu's Death: Who Was MK Muthu, Step Brother of Tamil Nadu CM Stalin?

=

MK Muthu, the eldest son of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, passed away on Saturday morning at the age of 77 due to age-related health issues. He had been unwell for several days and died around 8 a.m. at his Chennai home. Muthu was the elder brother of current Chief Minister, MK Stalin.

Following Muthu's passing, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) cancelled all official events planned for the day as a mark of respect. His body will be placed for public homage at his father Karunanidhi's Gopalapuram residence.

Legacy in Cinema and Music

Born to Karunanidhi and his first wife Padmavathi, Muthu was a versatile personality who made notable contributions to Tamil cinema and music before entering politics. He debuted in acting with the 1972 film "Pillaiyo Pillai," where he played a dual role, and later appeared in movies like "Pookkari," "Anayaa Vilakku," and "Ellam Avale."

Muthu's on-screen presence and resemblance to legendary actor and former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran brought him significant popularity. Besides acting, he also worked as a playback singer, with his song "Uyarndha Idathila Pirandhavan Naan" from "Anayaa Vilakku" becoming a cult favourite among Tamil film music fans.

Political Influence

Muthu's involvement with the Dravidian movement began early, heavily influenced by his father's political legacy. Although his political career was brief, he remained connected to Dravidian ideology throughout his life.

Chief Minister Stalin paid tribute to his elder brother both in person and through an emotional social media post. "The news of the passing of my beloved elder brother, MK Muthu, the eldest son of our family's pillar Kalaignar, has struck me like lightning. He loved me as much as our parents did. I am deeply pained by the loss of someone so close to my heart," CM Stalin wrote on his official 'X' handle.

Family Ties

Stalin reminisced that their father named Muthu after their grandfather Muthuveeran. "Like our father, Muthu contributed to the Dravidian movement through theatre from a young age. He had a unique style in acting, dialogue delivery, and body language. It was this passion that drew him into cinema in the 1970s," CM Stalin added.

Take a Poll

Muthu's life was marked by his contributions to both cinema and politics, leaving behind a legacy that continues to influence many within Tamil Nadu's cultural landscape.
