Karur Rally Stampede: Case Filed Against Vijay's TVK General Secretary, District Secretary

The Karur Town police have filed a case against Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) general secretary Bussy Anand, Karur West district secretary V P Mathiyazhagan, and state office-bearer C T Nirmal Kumar, following a stampede at a rally led by party president and actor Vijay in Velysamupuram. The incident on Saturday left 39 people dead and 83 injured. The case invokes four sections of the Indian Penal Code, focusing on safety violations and inadequate crowd management.

Out of the 39 victims, 27 were residents of Karur district. Two each came from Erode, Dindigul, and Tiruppur, while one was from Salem. Emur village in Karur faced a particularly heavy loss, with five residents among the deceased: Priyadarshini and her young daughter Tharanika, Chandra, Arukkani, and 10-year-old Prithik.

Chief Minister's Response and Compensation

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin visited Karur late Saturday night to meet survivors and grieving families. He announced Rs 10 lakh ex gratia for each deceased's next of kin and Rs 1 lakh for critically injured individuals. Additionally, CM Stalin ordered a judicial inquiry led by retired High Court judge Justice Aruna Jagadeesan, emphasizing the importance of preventing such tragedies in the future.

Investigation and Accountability

Police officials have confirmed that Mathiyazhagan is currently the only individual named in the First Information Report (FIR). However, authorities are investigating whether negligence by others contributed to the disaster. "The investigation is continuing, and further culpability will be fixed after a detailed inquiry," said a senior officer.

The rally was part of Vijay's statewide political tour for TVK. Thousands had gathered since morning under harsh conditions without sufficient food or water. The crowd swelled further after social media updates indicated Vijay would arrive at noon, but he reached only by 7:40 p.m., causing chaos and a deadly stampede.

Response from Authorities

Tamil Nadu Director General of Police G. Venkataraman described the incident as "deeply regrettable" and emphasized that the focus is on presenting facts and preventing future occurrences. Police are reviewing event permission procedures to ensure stricter safety measures at large gatherings.

Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) president Thol. Thirumavalavan has called for increased compensation for victims' families, suggesting Rs 50 lakh as appropriate relief. He termed the disaster "an unimaginable human tragedy that warrants both accountability and greater relief."

The Tamil Nadu government has deployed senior ministers and officials to supervise medical treatment and relief efforts. Ambulances transported the injured to Karur Medical College Hospital and nearby private facilities promptly after the incident.

Panic spread as many attendees fainted due to overcrowding, resulting in a deadly crush. Authorities are committed to implementing stricter safety protocols at large gatherings to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
