Is Nainar Nagendran Replacing Annamalai As TN BJP President? Tirunelveli MLA In Delhi To Meet Amit Shah
Amid speculation over a leadership change in the Tamil Nadu BJP, senior leader and Tirunelveli MLA Nainar Nagendran flew to Delhi on Tuesday evening, triggering fresh discussions about the party's next state president.
Will Nagendran Become Next TN BJP Prez?
Nagendran, the BJP's legislature party leader in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, is reportedly set to meet top BJP and RSS leaders, including JP Nadda and Amit Shah, as the party finalizes its decision, according to multiple reports in Tamil Media. An official announcement on the next president could come within the next 48 hours.

Why Nagendran is a Frontrunner
A former AIADMK minister, Nagendran is seen as a potential consensus candidate who could ease alliance negotiations-a crucial factor as the BJP seeks to rebuild ties with the AIADMK ahead of the 2026 state elections. However, a section of people in the party is against his elevation, considering his past association with the AIADMK.
Annamalai's Future Hangs in the Balance
The leadership transition comes amid strained BJP-AIADMK relations, with AIADMK chief Edappadi K. Palaniswami reportedly demanding the removal of K. Annamalai as state president during his recent meeting with Amit Shah. The rift stems from Annamalai's controversial remarks about Dravidian stalwarts C.N. Annadurai and J. Jayalalithaa in 2023, which led to a public fallout between the allies.
While Annamalai's aggressive style won him grassroots support, his critical statements complicated alliance talks. Speaking to reporters in Coimbatore recently, Annamalai said, "There is no contest in Tamil Nadu BJP, we will select a leader unanimously. But I am not in the race. I am not in the BJP state leadership race."
Other Contenders in the Fray
The race also includes:
Union Minister L. Murugan
Former Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan
Mahila Morcha chief Vanathi Srinivasan (reportedly backed by a Union Minister)
Senior leader H. Raja, known for his hardline stance
With the assembly elections approaching, the BJP's central leadership is weighing whether to appoint a conciliatory figure to mend ties with the AIADMK or a firebrand leader to consolidate its independent base.
What's Next?
As Delhi deliberates, all eyes are on whether Annamalai will be retained in a different role or replaced entirely.
