How Tamil Nadu Is Becoming Electric Vehicle (EV) Capital Of India
Tamil Nadu is fast becoming the electric vehicle (EV) capital of India, with its auto manufacturing prowess and Chennai's status as the "Detroit of Asia" attracting significant EV investments. The state is poised to lead the EV revolution, with several high-profile projects and initiatives bolstering its position.
One of the major developments is the return of Ford Motors, which has announced plans to re-enter Tamil Nadu with its EV ambitions. Vietnamese EV manufacturer VinFast has also committed to a $2 billion investment for a new plant in the state, further solidifying Tamil Nadu's appeal to global EV players.

In a significant boost to the local EV ecosystem, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin is set to lay the foundation stone for Tata Motors-Jaguar Land Rover's (JLR) new plant on September 28. This plant will focus on manufacturing premium electric vehicles, marking a shift from simply assembling to producing EVs in India. Tata Motors plans to roll out "Made in India" models based on JLR's Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA), aimed at both export and domestic markets. The plant is expected to be operational within the next 12-18 months.
Also, the Renault and Nissan alliance is investing a significant sum of Rs 5,300 crore to upgrade their Chennai plant. This investment will enable the alliance to transition to the production of electric vehicles."
In 2024, Tamil Nadu has already secured massive EV investment commitments, including Rs 9,000 crore from Tata Motors-JLR, up to $2 billion from VinFast, Rs 3,000 crore from Royal Enfield, and Rs 2,000 crore from Hyundai and Stellantis. These investments will significantly bolster the state's EV manufacturing capabilities.
Earlier this year, Citroën became the first multinational car manufacturer in India to export domestically produced EVs from Tamil Nadu, sending the Ë-C3 to international markets. This marked a milestone for the state's growing EV export potential.
Tamil Nadu has already contributed to 40% of India's EV production, with over four lakh of the ten lakh EVs sold last year being manufactured in the state. In the two-wheeler segment, the state leads the nation, with 68% of all EV two-wheelers produced locally. Top manufacturers such as Ola Electric, TVS Motor, and Ather Energy, which are among the top five EV makers in the country, have set up their bases in Tamil Nadu.
The state currently accounts for 70% of the total EV two-wheeler manufacturing in India, with a production capacity of 10 million units. To further accelerate the growth of the EV sector, the state government has identified six cities-Coimbatore, Trichy, Tirunelveli, Madurai, Salem, and Chennai-as hubs for EV development.
With these developments, Tamil Nadu is solidifying its reputation as the go-to destination for electric vehicle investments, positioning itself at the forefront of India's transition to sustainable transportation.
