How Much Money Have Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai & Other Metro Projects Got From Centre In 2 Years? Full List

The Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL) phase 2 project has received no funding from the Central government over the past two years, according to recent data released by Sun News.

While metro projects in other major cities across the country have seen substantial investments, Chennai's ambitious expansion plan remains unfunded by the Centre.

The data reveals that significant amounts have been allocated to metro projects nationwide, including:

  • Delhi: Rs 5,925.69 crore for the Delhi Metro and Rs 43,431.45 crore for the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS.
  • Ahmedabad: Rs 2,596.17 crore
  • Surat: Rs 3,961.78 crore
  • Mumbai: Rs 4,402.05 crore
  • Bengaluru: Rs 7,658.77 crore
  • Pune: Rs 1,357.73 crore
  • Nagpur: Rs 1,199.06 crore
  • Indore: Rs 1,365.74 crore
  • Bhopal: Rs 830.54 crore
  • Patna: Rs 1,176.25 crore
  • Kanpur: Rs 2,629.25 crore
  • Kochi: Rs 146.76 crore
  • Chennai: Rs 0

However, Chennai, which has been eagerly waiting for support on its metro project, has received no central funds in the last two years.

Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Tokhan Sahu, informed Parliament recently that the Chennai Metro phase 2, which spans 118.9 km and is estimated to cost Rs 63,246 crore, is classified as a "highly cost-intensive" project.

The approval for such projects is contingent upon feasibility and resource availability. The Tamil Nadu government has committed Rs 21,000 crore to the project since 2021, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah laying the foundation stone in 2020.

Ironically, the Central government has allocated generous funds to metro projects in other BJP-led states and even to Congress-ruled Karnataka and AAP-ruled Delhi during the same period. The disparity in funding raises concerns about the Centre's commitment to balancing regional development.

Sahu also said that the Centre's share in the Chennai Metro phase 2 project is Rs 7,424.9 crore, amounting to just 15.4 per cent of the total cost.
