Hosur Airport: Tamil Nadu Zeroes In On Two Sites For Game Changing Greenfield Project Next To Bengaluru

Big plans are in motion for a new greenfield airport in Hosur, Krishnagiri district, with Tamil Nadu's government shortlisting two potential locations to serve the growing needs of this manufacturing hub which is next to Karnataka's capital city Bengaluru.
Where Are These Sites?

One site is just 1.5 kilometers from the private airstrip run by Taneja Aerospace and Aviation Limited (TAAL), while the other is near Ulagam, to the east of Hosur and north of Shoolagiri. Both locations are within a 20-kilometer radius and are now being considered for a detailed study by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), which the government plans to formally request soon, The Hindu reported.

Hosur Airport Tamil Nadu Zeroes In On Two Sites For Game Changing Greenfield Project Next To Bengaluru

The move comes after Chief Minister M.K. Stalin held a high-level meeting at the state secretariat. Back in September, a joint team from AAI and TIDCO assessed four sites-Thogarai Agraharam, Shoolagiri, Dhasapalli, and the area near the TAAL airstrip. Based on an interim report, the government has now narrowed it down to two.

There's buzz that the location near the existing private airstrip might have the upper hand. However, if this site is chosen, the government may need to negotiate a deal with the private company that owns the airstrip, depending on whether they're willing to sell it at a reasonable price, The Times of India reported.

What's the Big Picture?

This project isn't just about an airport-it's about putting Hosur on the map as a logistics and business powerhouse. According to Srivats Ram, Chairman of the CII Tamil Nadu State Council, the airport could create a twin-city ecosystem with Bengaluru, driving growth in nearby districts like Dharmapuri and Salem.

He told TOI: "This project aligns with the vision to foster regional integration, potentially creating a dynamic twin-city ecosystem with Bengaluru and catalysing growth in neighbouring districts such as Dharmapuri and Salem. Despite obstacles, the project holds the promise of transforming Hosur into a pivotal hub of economic and logistical activity, strengthening Tamil Nadu's position as an industrial powerhouse and fostering crossstate collaborations."

Hosur, already a hub for automotive manufacturing, is now diving into cutting-edge industries like electronics and EVs. The airport would be a game-changer, improving connectivity, boosting industrial activity, and solidifying Tamil Nadu's reputation as an industrial leader.
What's Next?

The detailed study is expected to kick off soon, bringing the dream of a greenfield airport one step closer to reality. If all goes as planned, Hosur could soon be soaring into the future, connecting Tamil Nadu with new opportunities.
