Heavy Rains Hit Chennai: Schools Closed, Work-From-Home Advisory In Effect
With heavy rainfall predicted, Tamil Nadu has taken precautionary steps to ensure public safety. Schools and colleges in Chennai and nearby districts have been ordered to close, and Chief Minister MK Stalin has advised information technology (IT) companies to allow employees to work from home until October 18.
This decision comes as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts a strong monsoon surge across Tamil Nadu, accompanied by an orange alert issued for several districts.

Key Updates: Heavy Rains Hit Chennai
IT Companies & Work-from-Home Advisory
In response to the rain alert, CM Stalin has urged IT companies in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu to implement work-from-home policies for employees through October 18, prioritizing their safety and minimizing commute risks.
School and College Closures
All schools and colleges in Chennai and surrounding districts have been instructed to remain closed on October 15 as a precautionary measure due to the anticipated downpours.
IMD Forecast and Rainfall Alert
The IMD has issued a heavy rainfall warning for Tamil Nadu, with expectations of intense downpours from October 12 to 16. Isolated areas across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, with October 14 and 15 expected to see the most substantial rains.
The alert follows the formation of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, which is anticipated to intensify and move northwest toward the Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and southern Andhra Pradesh coasts in the coming days.
Government Preparedness and Relief Measures
To address potential flooding, CM Stalin held a review meeting to assess the state's monsoon readiness. As part of the contingency plan, the Chennai Corporation Commissioner reported that 990 pumps and 57 tractors with pump sets are on standby, along with 36 motorboats, large supplies of bleach and lime powder, and phenol for flood control efforts.
Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin also inspected vulnerable areas, such as the Narayanapuram lake banks and Ambedkar road canals, to evaluate flood defenses. He shared updates on the situation on X, formerly Twitter, noting the state's proactive steps in line with the Chief Minister's directives.
With these measures, Tamil Nadu aims to mitigate the impact of heavy rains and ensure the safety of its residents amid the adverse weather forecast.
