Dry Days Alert Tamil Nadu: Bars & TASMAC Shops To Be Closed For 5 Days - Check Dates
As the election fever grips Tamil Nadu, a different kind of buzz was spreading among the tipplers - the temporary closure of TASMAC liquor shops. Boozers across the state were in for a dry spell, with a total of five days earmarked for closure over the next two weeks.
The first closure was slated for April 17, 18, and 19, coinciding with the Lok Sabha Election 2024. This move aimed to ensure that voters could participate in the democratic process without any influence from alcohol.

The polling for the 39 Lok Sabha seats will be held on Friday. Following this, April 21 would see another closure, this time to commemorate Mahaveer Jayanti, a major festival for the Jain community.
Also, another closure loomed on May 1, in observance of May Day. This leaves the regular tipplers pondering their options and perhaps contemplating a temporary break from their habitual indulgence.
For these brief periods, the TASMAC outlets would stand silent, their shutters down, serving as a reminder of the diverse tapestry of events that make up life in Tamil Nadu.
The alcohol shops are closed during elections to maintain law and order, prevent potential disturbances, and ensure a fair and peaceful electoral process. Alcohol consumption can sometimes lead to public disorder, violence, or disturbances that may interfere with the voting process or compromise the safety of voters.
By temporarily closing alcohol shops, the Election Commission aims to create a calm and secure environment conducive to free and fair elections. Also, restricting alcohol sales can help deter the influence of money and alcohol in influencing voters' decisions, promoting a more transparent electoral process.
Also, alcohol shops are sometimes closed during certain festivals due to cultural and religious beliefs that discourage the consumption of alcohol during these times.
