Dry Day Effect: Chennai Cops Assault Man For Selling Alcohol Illegally, Demands Rs 50K Not To File Case
The cops from Chennai have been reportedly suspended for allegedly assaulting a man who illegally sold liquor during one of the dry days in Chennai, last week.
In view of the Lok Sabha elections, the bards and TASMAc shops were shut for three days - April 17, 18, and 19. Violating the order, 48-year-old Perumal sold alcohol and he was caught selling it in Kancheepuram by three police officials, including head constable Sankar, and two constables, Ganesan and Anandaraj, according to a report in DT Next.

They assaulted him, seizing Rs 2,000 and some liquor. Subsequently, they demanded Rs 50,000 from him to refrain from lodging a case.
Perumal was hospitalised after they beat him up.
Meanwhile, Tambaram City Police Commissioner A Amalraj has suspended the cops involved in the incident. An investigation has been ordered into the incident.
The polling for the 39 Lok Sabha seats was held last Friday. Following this, April 21 was another closure, this time to commemorate Mahaveer Jayanti, a major festival for the Jain community.
However, the liquor shops will be shut again in the state on May 1.
The alcohol shops are closed during elections to maintain law and order, prevent potential disturbances, and ensure a fair and peaceful electoral process. Alcohol consumption can sometimes lead to public disorder, violence, or disturbances that may interfere with the voting process or compromise the safety of voters.
