DMK Trying To Break Alliance With AIADMK: Tamil Nadu BJP

The Tamil Nadu BJP has accused the DMK and its allies of attempting to break the AIADMK-BJP alliance ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. Despite these efforts, the saffron party remains confident that the ties will prevail, drawing parallels to the recent success of the Lord Murugan Devotees' Conference in Madurai.

DMK's Alleged Interference

BJP spokesperson A.N.S. Prasad criticised the DMK government for allegedly obstructing the Murugan Devotees' Conference, held on June 22 in Madurai. He claimed the police imposed "unprecedented restrictions," forcing organisers to secure a High Court order for permission. "The conditions were harsher than those during colonial rule," Prasad stated, accusing the DMK of suppressing Hindu sentiment.

Conference Success and Political Implications

The event, organised by the Hindu Munnani with BJP support, drew over 500,000 attendees, showcasing meticulous planning-ample facilities, zero law-and-order issues, and post-event cleanliness. Prasad contrasted this with typical political rallies, noting the lack of liquor sales or chaos, which he framed as a moral victory over the DMK's "anti-Hindu" stance.

DMK's "Desperation" to Break the Alliance

Prasad alleged that the DMK, threatened by the AIADMK-BJP coalition's strength, is exploiting a three-minute video from the conference to sow discord. The video, which emphasised Hindu unity, has been misrepresented by DMK allies as a BJP ploy to dominate the alliance.

However, Tamil Nadu BJP chief Nainar Nagenthran dismissed these claims, reiterating that the conference was purely spiritual and unrelated to electoral politics.

Unity in Diversity: AIADMK-BJP's Common Goal

While acknowledging policy differences between the AIADMK and BJP, Nagenthran emphasised their shared objective: defeating the DMK in 2026. "The alliance is strategic, not ideological. Both parties retain their core principles but agree on removing the DMK from power," he said812. He credited Union Home Minister Amit Shah's leadership for solidifying the coalition and dismissed rumours of internal rifts.

Meanwhile, Indian Political Democracy Strategy (IPDS) survey has indicated that the DMK is ahead of the AIADMK if the assembly elections are held now. One of the notable takeaways is the rise of K. Annamalai, who, despite lacking a cinema or political dynasty background, has become a visible leader in the state. However, following his removal as BJP state president, the party's vote share appears to have dipped.
