What is the Purpose of the Meeting?

The primary agenda is to address concerns over the 2026 delimitation process, which will redraw parliamentary constituencies based on updated population data. States like Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and others that have effectively controlled population growth. These parties fear that they might lose parliamentary seats, while states with higher population growth may gain more seats. This means there will be a balance in power and the BJP, which has stronghold in north Indian states, will gain big from delimitation.

What are the Key Demands?

Extend the Current Delimitation Framework: The meeting will push to prolong the use of the 1971 Census data for delimitation for another 30 years beyond 2026.

Reconsider the 2026 Delimitation Process: A resolution will be drafted demanding a fairer approach to the process.

Explore Legal Avenues: Discussions will focus on constitutional challenges and potential petitions to the Supreme Court.

Public Awareness Campaigns: Efforts will be made to mobilize public support in states that stand to lose representation.

What is the Significance Of This Meeting?

National Movement: Initially, it looked like just an initiative pushed by the DMK but it is now gaining momentum as parties are joining forces to demand fair representation.

Federalism at Stake: CM Stalin has repeatedly said that losing representation in the Parliament would undermine India's federal structure and silence the voices of efficient, progressive states in Lower House.

Political Unity: The meeting transcends party lines, with 58 political parties (excluding the BJP) in Tamil Nadu already endorsing a collective stand on the issue.

Where and When Will The Meeting Happen?

The meeting is scheduled to take place at 10 am today at ITC Grand Chola Hotel in Chennai. The outcome of the meeting will determine the next steps.

Can This Meeting Exert Pressure On The Centre?

The meeting is reuniting many parties. Notably, the ruling Congress in Telangana led by Revanth Reddy and Opposition leader KTR are taking part in the meeting. If Stalin can make the leaders to leave out their personal differences and work for a common cause, it might possibly put pressure on the Centre.
