Controversy Erupts After Scheduled Caste Officer Bows To DMK Councillor In Tamil Nadu

A video from Tamil Nadu's Villupuram district has sparked outrage, showing a Scheduled Caste government officer, Muniyappan, bowing at the feet of DMK councillor Ramya Raja in the Tindivanam Municipality office. The footage reveals voices urging him to apologise. This incident has led to significant political backlash.

BJP state president K Annamalai shared the video on social media, criticising the DMK for hypocrisy. "The DMK parades as a party of social justice but practices only social injustice," he stated. The video has intensified discussions around social justice and caste discrimination.

Muniyappan's Allegations

Muniyappan filed a complaint with Tindivanam police against councillor Ramya and her husband, Raja. He claimed that when he delayed finding a document, they hurled casteist insults at him. According to his complaint, they used derogatory terms like "colony payyan" and "Pariah."

In his complaint, Muniyappan also alleged that senior officers later convened a meeting where he was instructed to apologise to the councillor. He claimed he was told to fall at her feet as part of the apology, which was captured in the viral video.

Ramya Raja's Response

Responding to the controversy, Ramya Raja told India Today that she did not compel Muniyappan to bow down. "Nobody asked him to fall at my feet. He got emotional and fell on his own," she explained. Her statement contrasts with Muniyappan's allegations.

The incident has highlighted ongoing issues of caste discrimination in India. It underscores the challenges faced by Scheduled Caste individuals in positions of authority when dealing with entrenched societal biases.
