Coimbatore’s Drinking Water Problem Resolved, No Water Issues Till 2050
With the completion of 3rd phase of works in Pillur drinking water project, no worries for Coimbatore residents regarding potable water requirement till 2050. The Pillur drinking water project adds more facilities to Coimbatore's basic infrastructure.
Benefits of the scheme by important officials:

Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner Prathap said, "Under CM Stalin's leadership, many significant schemes ensuring road, drinking water and sewage drainage facilities, have been implemented in Coimbatore. The 620 crore worth Pillur project was intended to diversify the source for drinking water in Coimbatore which otherwise was solely dependent on Siruvani dam."

He continued, "Water from Siruvani dam is not reliable owing to the possibility of monsoon failure in a particular year. Realising this constraint, CM Stalin commenced the Pillur project which is expected to be completed in a few weeks. Through the Pillur project, 178 MLD drinking water will be available to Coimbatore. For resolving the potable water problem of the district, I sincerely thank CM Stalin."
Senthil Kumar, Coimbatore district Executive Engineer, Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board said, "Currently, the drinking water requirement of Coimbatore which is having a population of 18 lakh, is fulfilled by water from Siruvani, Aliyar and Bhavani. The population projection for Coimbatore in 2050 is 32 lakh. In order to bridge the gap between the present and future drinking water requirement, the Pillur project was commenced by CM Stalin."

He also said, "Pillur head water station is at Samayapuram on Bhavani river basin. From the head station, water will be pumped for 15 km before it reaches Marudur refinery. From Marudur refinery, potable water will be stored in a reservoir of 144 lakh capacity at Pannimadai, from where the water will be distributed across Coimbatore. Coimbatore is categorised into 6 zones for water distribution which will be carried out via ground pipes without any pumps, to save electricity."
Karthick, Coimbatore DMK District Secretary said, "The 1st Pillur drinking water project was introduced in DMK regime when Kalaignar Karunanidhi was the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Other drinking water projects such as 2nd Pillur project, Goundampalayam Vadavalli joint project, Aliyar project and now the 3rd Pillur project, all were launched during the DMK regime."

Coimbatore District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati said, "With the 3rd Pillur drinking water project, drinking water deficit will not be a problem in Coimbatore till 2050. The Pillur project also provides the opportunity for saving approximately 23 MLD water which is planned to be shared with the neighbouring panchayats around Coimbatore."

The water pipes for the project will be brought via underground tunnels. The intention behind the arrangement is to avoid the damage caused by water leakages to the road. The underground tunnels (10m wide, 6m high and 900m length) are large enough for the technicians to fix the leakages and are equipped with electric lights.
On the whole, the Pillur drinking water project is a modern one which prepares Coimbatore to aid the future increase of demand for drinking water owing to population increase.

No drinking water issues for Coimbatore residents till 2050.
