Coimbatore Gets New Flyover: Traffic Woes To Ease As Ukkadam-Athupalam Flyover Opens To Public
Six years after laying the foundation stone, the Ukkadam-Athupalam flyover in Coimbatore has finally opened for public on Friday.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin inaugurated the major project in Coimbatore, one of Tamil Nadu's key industrial hubs. The project, which began in 2018, was completed in two phases.

While the main structure of the flyover is now operational, work on the approach roads leading to Sungam is in its final stages. The Ukkadam ramp is 150 meters long and 8.45 meters high, while the ramps on Palakkad Road and Pollachi Road measure 162 meters and 144 meters long respectively, with heights ranging from 7.58 to 8.40 meters.
The flyover, constructed at a cost of Rs. 460 crore, is set to alleviate the traffic congestion in one of the busiest commercial areas of the state's second-largest city.
Coimbatore, often dubbed the Manchester of South India, is renowned for its vibrant small and medium-scale industries. The city's strategic location as a gateway to Kerala has further cemented its status as a preferred destination for large-scale industries, IT companies, and educational institutions, contributing to its economic significance and diverse population.
During his visit, CM Stalin also launched the Tamil Puthalvan scheme and laid foundation stones for several other development projects, including a new flyover at Laly Road junction, the Kalaignar Library and Knowledge Centre at the Semmozhi Poonga complex, and new buildings at Bharathiar University.
Also, he inaugurated a food street near V.O.C. grounds, a shelter for the homeless in Kadalaikara Sandhu, and a new building at the Government Arts College in Puliyakulam.
