Chennai-Vladivostok Maritime Corridor: How This Will Boost India-Russia Trade
The much-anticipated Chennai-Vladivostok maritime corridor is now operational, marking a significant milestone in strengthening maritime ties between India and Russia.
A Strategic Shortcut
The Chennai-Vladivostok sea route spans approximately 5,600 nautical miles and is expected to drastically cut down transportation time between India and Russia's Far East. Goods that once took over 40 days to travel via Europe can now reach their destination in just 24 days, saving up to 16 days.

"This corridor opens immense opportunities for trade and cooperation. Container ships carrying crude oil, metals, and textiles have already started arriving at Indian ports," Indian ports, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said on Monday.
In comparison, the current trade route between Mumbai and St. Petersburg covers a distance of 8,675 nautical miles, taking 35-40 days. By leveraging this new route, large container ships traveling at a speed of 20-25 knots (37-46 km/h) could further streamline logistics, fostering faster trade exchanges.
Vladivostok: A Strategic Hub
Vladivostok, Russia's largest Pacific Ocean port, sits strategically near the China-Russia border. Its proximity to key Asian markets adds to the corridor's significance, offering India a stronger foothold in the Pacific trade network while enhancing access to Russian resources.
A Leap in Global Trade
The operationalization of the Chennai-Vladivostok corridor enhances global trade logistics. By reducing transportation times and fostering strategic maritime alliances, India is poised to unlock new trade opportunities, reinforcing its position in international markets.
