Chennai Taxi Strike: Will Cabs And Auto-Rickshaws Be Available From Feb 1? Check Alternatives

Commuters in Chennai may face difficulties finding cabs and auto-rickshaws starting February 1, as drivers associated with ride-hailing services Uber and Ola are going on a strike. The protest stems from their long-standing demand to shift from a commission-based earnings model to a fixed daily subscription fee.

Who's on Strike?

Chennai Taxi Strike From Tomorrow

Auto and taxi drivers working with Ola and Uber are suspending operations due to high commission deductions that cut into their earnings. The protesting drivers are also pushing for improved compensation policies for those injured or killed while on duty.

However, not all services will be impacted. Drivers affiliated with platforms like Namma Yatri and Taxina will continue to operate as usual. Rapido has also confirmed that its bike taxi services will remain available, mitigating some of the disruption.

The spokesperson from Rapido told Oneindia: "With auto and taxi drivers set to strike in Chennai starting February 1, ride-hailing services throughout the city are expected to face disruptions. However, Rapido will continue to support their captains & customers by operating as usual.

Our fixed subscription-based model, which liberates captains from high commissions and ensures a more sustainable earning structure. This allows us to offer our customers uninterrupted and reliable transportation options, even during challenging situations. We appreciate the trust and support of our riders and encourage them to plan their travel with Rapido."

Key Demands of Striking Drivers

The timing of the strike coincides with the introduction of revised auto fares in Chennai. The new pricing structure, announced by auto unions, sets:

  • Base fare: ₹50 for the first 1.8 km
  • Additional distance charge: ₹18 per km
  • Waiting charges: ₹1.50 per minute after the first five minutes
  • Night surcharge: 50% extra between 11 PM and 5 AM

Drivers argue that Ola and Uber deduct up to 25% per ride, significantly reducing their take-home income. In contrast, Namma Yatri and Taxina charge a flat subscription fee, allowing drivers to retain their full fare earnings.

What Driver Unions Are Saying

Zahir Hussain A, coordinator of the Confederation of Drivers' Unions in Chennai, expressed frustration over fare revision delays. "We've been demanding fair pricing for over 12 years, but the government has not implemented any changes. The transport minister keeps saying it's awaiting cabinet approval," he said.

He also highlighted the financial struggles faced by drivers, stating, "With commission rates as high as 40%, many of us are forced to negotiate fares above app estimates, leading to disputes with passengers. This strike is necessary to sustain our livelihoods, pay rent, clear loans, and support our families."

Will There Be Any Alternative Transport?

While services on Uber and Ola are expected to be disrupted, Namma Yatri, Taxina, and Rapido will continue operating without interruption. Commuters are advised to plan their travel accordingly, considering potential delays or limited availability of cabs and auto-rickshaws.
