Chennai School Students Told Their Lives Are Result Of 'Past Sins' In A Lecture, Triggers Controversy

A wave of protests has erupted in Chennai as members of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and the Students' Federation of India (SFI) question the Department of Education over the controversial 'Spiritual Awakening Classes' held in government-run schools. The protests took place after it was revealed that an NGO had conducted a spiritual session at the Government Girls Higher Secondary School, causing outrage among the public, parents, and educational activists.

The controversy began when a speaker named Mahavishnu was invited to deliver a lecture on "Self-confidence" to the students. However, the session soon took an unexpected turn, with Mahavishnu focusing heavily on spiritual themes rather than the actual topic.

During the lecture, he reportedly made statements suggesting that the students' current lives were shaped by divine forces as a consequence of sins committed in their past lives. This remark, in particular, triggered widespread criticism and backlash from various quarters, including students, parents, and social activists.

In response to the backlash, the District Chief Education Officer ordered the principals of two government schools to provide explanations regarding how such a speaker was allowed to deliver a controversial lecture on their premises. The principals, Shanmugasundaram of Saidapet High School and Tamizharasi of Ashok Nagar Girls High School, have been instructed to submit detailed reports explaining the circumstances under which Mahavishnu was given access to speak at their schools.

The incident has raised serious concerns about the vetting and approval process for speakers invited to government schools. Critics have pointed out the apparent lack of due diligence in allowing an NGO to conduct a session that deviated significantly from its intended purpose, potentially imposing specific spiritual beliefs on impressionable young minds. Questions have been raised about who authorized this event and how the content of the lecture went unchecked.

Reacting to the situation, Tamil Nadu School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh stated, "Strong action will be taken. Following the action, such events will never happen in Tamil Nadu." He also mentioned plans to meet with the teacher who argued with Mahavishnu during the session, suggesting further scrutiny of the situation.
