In the last few weeks, the power cut has become a major issue affecting the Chennai residents. There have been protests against the electricity department for unannounced power cuts as the citizens struggle to cope up with the sweltering summer heat.
Meanwhile, furious residents of the TNUHDB complex in Vyasarpadi blocked Sathya Moorthi Nagar Main Road on Tuesday morning, halting rush-hour traffic for an hour. The protest followed a grueling 16-hour power cut and back-to-back elevator failures that trapped 16 people in less than 24 hours, according to a report in DT Next.
The 13-story building, which houses over 450 families, has seen its six elevators dwindle to just two or three functional units since opening in May 2022. For elderly residents like M. Rani, who lives on the seventh floor, the broken lifts have turned daily life into a nightmare. "We were forced to sleep on the veranda because of the heat," Rani said, recounting how 15 people were trapped across two separate elevator incidents.
TNUHDB officials blamed voltage fluctuations for the blackout and vowed to sack negligent, intoxicated maintenance staff. Meanwhile, Minister C. T. R. Nirmal Kumar deflected blame to the previous government, citing widespread procurement fraud and systemic leakages that the current administration is working to fix.
On power cuts, Minister CTR Nirmal Kumar said, "You know, see, previous government, they have already screwed up all the complete department. So every procurement was misused and everything was misused. Definitely we wanted to cut down all the leakages, reduce all the leakages to the department....''
On the other hand, Chennai's peak power demand touched a new high of 4,809 MW at 10 pm on May 21. It surpassedthe previous record of 4,769 MW registered on May 31, 2024.
