Starting October 15, 2024, schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts will observe a holiday to keep students safe from the adverse weather conditions. Private IT companies have also been instructed to allow employees to work from home during the period of October 15 to October 18, 2024, to minimize disruption and ensure safety.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Tamil Nadu Disaster Response Force (TDSRF) will be deployed in advance to areas identified as likely to be affected by flooding. Rescue boats are to be stationed today in these areas to facilitate quick response efforts.

District monitoring officers are tasked with coordinating preparedness activities, rescue, and relief operations with district administration officials in their respective districts. This ensures a unified and efficient approach to managing the situation.

The authorities are also taking steps to control the prices of essential commodities, ensuring that they do not rise amidst potential supply disruptions. Cooperative societies are instructed to guarantee the uninterrupted supply of milk and dairy products during this period.

To accommodate individuals from areas at risk, advance arrangements are being made for relief camps. Today, bread and bottled drinking water will be stocked in these centers, along with necessary medical facilities. Special provisions, such as wheelchairs, will be arranged for individuals with disabilities.

In case of transportation disruptions, alternative routes will be arranged for the public to ensure smooth movement. Moreover, adequate illuminating signs and safety barriers will be installed at locations where roadwork is taking place during nighttime hours to enhance safety.

To maintain stability in electricity supply, additional staff will be present at the control center. Authorities will continuously monitor rainfall levels and inflow into reservoirs to manage water levels effectively in the dams.

Special attention will be given to vulnerable populations, including the elderly, individuals with disabilities, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers, ensuring they are accommodated in safe locations in affected areas.

Additionally, necessary rescue equipment, such as water pumps, saws, and JCB machines, will be kept ready for immediate deployment in emergency situations. Sufficient generators will also be maintained to provide uninterrupted drinking water supply to affected areas.

Public health measures will be implemented to ensure community safety during this challenging period.
