Chennai Metro News: Siruseri-Kilambakkam Plans Axed - What's The Alternative Route Mulled By CMRL?

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has shelved its plans for a metro route from Siruseri to Kilambakkam bus terminus via Kelambakkam, citing feasibility issues. The decision comes after the completion of a Detailed Feasibility Report (DFR) that deemed the area unsuitable for metro rail infrastructure, according to a report in DT Next.

The DFR, submitted to the government in September 2023, highlighted a disparity between projected and actual passenger traffic. According to CMRL officials, the study revealed a Peak Hour Peak Direction (PHPD) traffic of only 5,000 passengers per hour, well below the ideal standard of 12,000 PHPD required for such a project.

Siruseri-Kilambakkam Metro Plans Dropped

A CMRL official told the website: "In the initial study conducted in the stretch, it was found that Peak Hour Peak Direction (PHPD) traffic is lower than the required level. The ideal PHPD standard is 12,000 passengers per hour. But, the study yielded only 5,000 PHPD."

The government, having reviewed the report, has decided to drop the proposal, thereby dropping curtains to the Siruseri-Kilambakkam Metro project. However, this development has disappointed the residents who were hoping that this project would ease traffic congestion.

Despite the setback, CMRL officials have indicated that alternative options are being explored. One such possibility under consideration is a detour via the Kelambakkam-Thiruporur corridor. However, no final decision has been reached over this alternative route.

The cancellation of the Siruseri-Kilambakkam Metro project underscores the importance of thorough feasibility studies in infrastructure planning. As Chennai continues to grapple with urban mobility challenges, finding sustainable solutions remains a key priority for authorities.

After many months, Metro Rail has experienced a significant decrease in ridership, with nearly 5.94 lakh fewer passengers in April. The last comparable drop occurred last year, when ridership fell from 85.5 lakh passengers in October 2023 to 80.01 lakh in November 2023.
