Chennai Metro Begins Trial Runs On Poonamallee-Porur Stretch: See First Visuals
The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has begun trial runs on the 9.1-kilometre stretch between Poonamallee and Porur.
The Trial Run

The trial runs between Poonamallee and Mullaithottam began in late March, encountering minor issues with the overhead systems. However, subsequent tests along this 3-km section have gone smoothly, The Hindu reported citing CMRL officials.
The first visuals of the trial runs are out online.
This elevated section includes 10 stations: Poonamallee Bypass, Poonamallee, Mullaithottam, Karayanchavadi, Kumananchavadi, Kattupakkam, Iyyapanthangal, Thellaiyagaram, Porur Bypass, and Porur Junction. Part of Corridor 4 - which links Light House to Poonamallee via Porur - this stretch will be the first segment of Phase II to open to the public.
"In the first trial, between Poonamallee and Mullaithottam, the trains were operated at only 15 kmph. This time, the average speed is likely to be 35-40 kmph. In the past month, we tested trains at 80 kmph, and there were no issues," an official told the English daily.
Stops:
- Poonamallee Bypass
- Poonamallee
- Mullaithotaam
- Karayanchavadi
- Kumananchavadi
- Kattupakkam
- Iyyapanthangal
- Thellaiyagaram
- Porur Bypass
- Porur Junction
The testing phase covers critical checks like braking efficiency, air-conditioning performance, acceleration, deceleration, track stability, and overhead line reliability.
A key focus is minimizing vibrations, thanks to the use of double resilient fasteners on the tracks. Officials will also monitor noise levels and track alignment to ensure a smooth and quiet passenger experience.
At his stage, there are two trains undergoing trials, and the two more will be added soon.
"As far as the track is concerned, we have double resilient fasteners, which will ensure there are no vibrations. Nevertheless, we will check them during the trials to be entirely sure. The parameters, geometry, and alignment of the track will be examined. We will also inspect whether there is noise during the train operations. If that occurs, we will take measures to prevent it so that passengers don't face any discomfort during travel," a source added.
