Chennai Floods 2023 Echoes 2015 Deluge, Exposing City's Stagnant Resilience
The torrential rain that lashed Chennai in 2023 wasn't just water; it was a deluge of deja vu. Streets turned rivers, homes into islands, eerily mirroring the devastation of 2015. Eight years later, the ghosts of that nightmare flood haunt the city, a chilling testament to lessons unlearned and resilience that stagnated.
But this time, the city wasn't facing just its monsoon demons. The expected landfall of Cyclone 'Michaung' in Southern Andhra Pradesh and the North coast of Tamil Nadu tonight added another layer of fear, unleashing continuous heavy rainfall and strong winds upon Chennai.

The scenes were hauntingly familiar: submerged cars bobbing like morbid toys, residents wading through waist-deep water, makeshift rafts navigating flooded lanes. The fury wasn't limited to water. Strong winds uprooted trees, adding chaos to the already struggling city. Express trains departing from Chennai Central were canceled as water levels reached the danger mark near Bridge No. 14, highlighting the city's precarious position amidst the storm's wrath. Several videos surfaced online showing Chennai airport runways flooded with water, causing operational delays. Around 400 flights were cancelled.
Chennai's 2023 floods aren't just about the rain, the wind, or even Cyclone Michaung. They're a stark reminder that the city's resilience remains a mirage, built on unaddressed vulnerabilities from 2015. Encroached waterways, choked drainage systems, and inadequate infrastructure - these sins of the past continue to plague Chennai, turning each heavy downpour into a potential disaster.

Chief Minister MK Stalin's call to residents to stay indoors until the storm abates speaks volumes about the city's preparedness. While the Chief Minister personally inspected the control room to assess the situation, the reality on the ground paints a different picture - a city bracing for the worst, haunted by the ghosts of its past.
The question isn't whether Chennai will weather this storm, but whether it will finally learn from it. Will it break the cycle of floods, rebuilding, and forgetting, or will it rewrite its story with proactive adaptation and responsible urban planning?
