Chennai-Bengaluru Expressway Update: First Stretch To Open This Month
In a significant step forward for the Bengaluru-Chennai expressway project, work on the remaining 400-metre stretch near Hoskote is now moving at full speed after the relocation of a temple that had delayed construction, The New Indian Express reported.
The expressway, stretching a total of 260 km across Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, is South India's first greenfield access-controlled route. With a project cost of Rs 17,900 crore, it promises to transform connectivity between the two major cities, reducing the current travel time of six hours to under three hours.

This four-lane expressway has been designed with potential future expansion to eight lanes and allows vehicles to travel at a maximum speed of 120 km/h.
Vilas P Brahmankar, the Regional Officer for the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) in Bengaluru, told the English daily that the 71-km section of the expressway within Karnataka will be completed and opened by the end of this month.
Brahmankar explained that the temple near Jinnagara Cross had initially slowed progress, but its successful relocation has enabled the construction team to focus on completing the remaining section. "Except for the 400-metre stretch, the entire 71 km of the expressway within Karnataka is ready. Now that the temple has been relocated, we are making swift progress, and the work will be completed by this month-end," he stated.
The Karnataka portion of the expressway is divided into three segments:
Package 1: Hoskote to Malur (27.1 km)
Package 2: Malur to Bangarpet (27.1 km)
Package 3: Bangarpet to Bethamangala (17.5 km)
While the Karnataka segment is nearing completion, the full launch of the expressway has faced delays due to unfinished work in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Originally targeted for completion by March this year, it is now expected that the expressway will be fully operational next year.
Benefits and Future Prospects
Once operational, the expressway will cut travel time significantly, with the Hoskote to KGF town stretch taking only 45 minutes instead of the current 1.5-hour drive. The project also includes interchanges at Hoskote, Malur, and KGF, which will enhance regional connectivity. Additionally, the expressway is set to link with the planned multi-modal logistics park at Dobbspet, further bolstering logistics and economic development.
Until the full 260-km route is opened, commuters will still benefit from the completed sections within Karnataka, allowing travel up to Malur and Bangarpet. The expressway represents a major step in improving transport infrastructure, promising quicker and more efficient travel, which will be pivotal for business and tourism in the region.
