Chennai–Bengaluru Bullet Train to Cut Travel Time to 73 Minutes: Ashwini Vaishnaw
In a major push to modernize inter-city connectivity, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has outlined an ambitious high-speed rail network across southern India, with the proposed Chennai-Bengaluru corridor expected to reduce travel time between Chennai and Bengaluru to just 73 minutes.
The project, part of a broader "High-Speed Diamond" network, aims to connect key economic centers with bullet train technology inspired by Japan's Shinkansen. The Chennai-Bengaluru stretch, covering approximately 306 km in its first phase, is designed for speeds of up to 350 km/h, with operational speeds of around 320 km/h.

According to officials, the high-speed corridor will include major stations at Chennai Central, Poonamallee, Parandur, Chittoor, Kolar, Whitefield, and Byappanahalli. While most of the route will be elevated, select sections will pass through tunnels, including underground stretches within both Chennai and Bengaluru.
The corridor forms part of a larger 463 km Chennai-Bengaluru-Mysuru high-speed project being developed by Indian Railways in coordination with the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL). It is one of seven priority high-speed corridors expected to collectively attract investments of around ₹16 lakh crore.
Beyond Chennai and Bengaluru, the proposed network includes rapid connections such as Hyderabad to Pune in under two hours, Pune to Mumbai in under 50 minutes, and Amaravati linking to both Hyderabad and Chennai within approximately 70 to 112 minutes.
The initiative is expected to significantly enhance regional mobility, reduce travel time, and support economic integration.
Speaking at an event in Visakhapatnam, the Minister also highlighted parallel developments in railway infrastructure. He announced that the South Coastal Railway Zone will become operational from June 1, 2026, marking a key administrative milestone for Andhra Pradesh.
The state has received a record railway budget allocation of ₹10,134 crore, with projects worth approximately ₹1.06 lakh crore currently underway. These include extensive track expansion, station redevelopment, and enhanced connectivity to ports and tourism hubs.
Officials noted that Andhra Pradesh has achieved 100% railway electrification and is witnessing rapid infrastructure growth, with over 1,700 km of track completed and thousands more under construction. Additionally, dozens of stations are being redeveloped, while new flyovers and underpasses aim to ease congestion.
With high-speed rail at its core and large-scale infrastructure upgrades underway, the southern corridor is poised to become a key driver of India's next phase of transport and economic development.
