DMK MP Kanimozhi Expresses Grief On 5 Deaths At Chennai Air Show
On Sunday, an air show in Chennai turned tragic as five people lost their lives and 230 others were hospitalised. The combination of extreme heat and overcrowding overwhelmed the attendees, according to authorities. The event aimed to set a record by gathering around 16 lakh people but resulted in chaos and distress.
DMK MP Kanimozhi expressed her sorrow over the incident, emphasising the need to avoid unmanageable gatherings. "The news of the death of five people is very sad and painful when the public who witnessed the air show held at the Marina beach in Chennai suffered due to overcrowding and high temperatures. Unmanageable gatherings should also be avoided," she tweeted.

Heat and Overcrowding at Air Show
The air show began at 11 am but many had already gathered by 8 am under the scorching sun. This led to several individuals fainting from heat exhaustion even before the event commenced. Emergency personnel provided aid, transporting over 30 individuals with dehydration symptoms to nearby hospitals.
Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian confirmed that dehydration caused the fatalities. He noted that extreme heat was a significant factor in these tragic deaths during the air show.
Challenges Faced by Attendees
The situation worsened as water vendors were removed from the vicinity, leaving attendees without access to drinking water. This added to their discomfort, exacerbating health issues among those present at the event.
A temporary stampede-like situation arose when thousands attempted to leave simultaneously. However, police managed to control the crowd effectively, ensuring ambulances could navigate through safely.
Political Reactions
The Opposition parties, BJP and AIADMK, criticised the DMK government for inadequate arrangements for such a large-scale event. They condemned the lack of proper planning which led to this unfortunate incident.
This developing story highlights concerns about managing large crowds in extreme weather conditions. It underscores the importance of ensuring safety measures are in place for public events.
