BJP Seeks Regional Support: Rajnath Singh’s Presence At Karunanidhi Event Highlights Strategic Shift
Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh recently attended a coin release ceremony marking the centenary of the late DMK leader Karunanidhi, reportedly on behalf of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This event holds particular significance in the evolving landscape of Indian politics, where the BJP, traditionally dismissive of regional parties, now finds itself in need of their support following its failure to secure a majority in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
The BJP, which previously overlooked the importance of regional alliances, is now actively courting support from regional parties like the DMK and Trinamool Congress. The BJP secured 240 seats in the recent elections, while the NDA as a whole won 292 seats. Despite these numbers, the party is keenly aware of the need for additional support from regional players, including the 21 MPs from the DMK and 47 MPs from the Trinamool Congress, to ensure smooth governance.

Historical precedents, such as Jayalalithaa's pivotal role in toppling the Vajpayee government in 1999, loom large in the BJP's calculations. The late Tamil Nadu leader had significant influence over Vajpayee's administration and withdrew her support, leading to his resignation. The current BJP leadership, mindful of this history, is working to avoid a similar fate by solidifying alliances with regional powerhouses.
Rajnath Singh's participation in the Karunanidhi centenary event is seen as part of this broader strategy. At the event, Singh praised Karunanidhi as a remarkable administrator and national leader, a gesture aimed at warming relations with the DMK. This move comes after an earlier attempt by Stalin to invite Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar to the event, which went unanswered, prompting Delhi to send Singh in an effort to appease the DMK.
The BJP's outreach to regional parties is driven by their minority status in the Lok Sabha and the need to secure legislative support in the Rajya Sabha, where crucial bills could face stiff opposition. By lauding Karunanidhi's contributions and engaging with DMK leaders, the BJP hopes to secure the party's backing in future parliamentary proceedings.
In conclusion, Rajnath Singh's presence at the coin release ceremony commemorating Karunanidhi underscores the BJP's strategic efforts to forge stronger ties with regional parties. Amidst a changing political landscape, these alliances could prove crucial in maintaining stability and advancing the party's legislative agenda.
