BJP Picks Tamil Powerhouse C.P. Radhakrishnan for Vice-Presidential Race

The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has made a strong entry into the race for the upcoming Vice-Presidential election by nominating C.P. Radhakrishnan, a senior leader from Tamil Nadu. The decision has drawn attention across political circles in the state, signaling the BJP's focus on experience, leadership, and recognition of hardworking individuals.

The election for Vice-President is scheduled for September 9th, with the last date for filing nominations on August 21st. The election follows the resignation of incumbent Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21st due to health reasons.

The decision to nominate C.P. Radhakrishnan, currently the Governor of Maharashtra, was taken by the BJP's Parliamentary Board, the party's highest decision-making body.

A Tribute to Tamil Culture

The BJP's nomination of C.P. Radhakrishnan is being seen as a tribute to Tamil culture and its hardworking people. The party and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have consistently promoted Tamil heritage, from recognizing Tamil as a primary language at the Kashi Tamil Sangamam to highlighting it on national and global platforms. PM Modi has also referred to Tamil as the world's oldest language.

The BJP has a history of honoring talent. The party nominated Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, one of Tamil Nadu's most respected figures, as President of India, even though the DMK-Congress alliance reportedly did not support his second term.

C.P. Radhakrishnan: A Leader from the Grassroots

C.P. Radhakrishnan's nomination highlights the BJP's commitment to principled leaders with strong track records. The decision was finalized in a meeting presided over by PM Modi, with NDA leaders authorizing him and BJP National President J.P. Nadda to select the candidate. The resolution was proposed by Rajiv Ranjan Singh of Janata Dal (United) and seconded by Ram Mohan Naidu of the Telugu Desam Party, after which Radhakrishnan was chosen.

Radhakrishnan has served as Governor of Jharkhand (2023-2024), held additional charge of Telangana, and was Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry. He is a two-time MP from Coimbatore and has also served as President of the BJP's Tamil Nadu unit, showing his strong roots and experience in public service.

A Political 'Checkmate' to the DMK

This nomination is also being seen as a strategic move against the DMK. While the DMK frequently emphasizes "Tamil, Tamilian" identity, it has chosen Sudarshan Reddy instead of a proud Tamilian like C.P. Radhakrishnan. The move highlights the difference between the two parties: the BJP honors Tamil pride at the national level, while the DMK's politics, according to observers, reduce it to slogans.
