Tamil Nadu BJP's SOS To Delhi: Facing Financial Hurdles in Run-up To Lok Sabha Elections

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), despite being a major national party, is reportedly facing financial challenges in Tamil Nadu for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. It's understood that the central headquarters has been informed about this issue. Unlike the regional Dravidian parties, the BJP's central office usually doesn't provide funds to state leaders for election expenses. However, this time, they have decided to allocate a significant amount of money to Tamil Nadu based on advice from intelligence officers. They suggested that BJP candidates need to spend more to compete with the Dravidian parties.

BJP Boosts Tamil Nadu Election Fund

Annamalai, the BJP chief in Tamil Nadu, has openly stated he will not engage in cash for vote. This stance has caused concern among BJP members in Coimbatore, who argue that funds are essential for managing election-related activities. They have directly communicated their concerns to Annamalai, emphasizing that without financial support, they cannot proceed. Annamalai, troubled by these developments, has reportedly sought additional funds from the party's national leadership for election expenses.

In Coimbatore, the competition is intense for the BJP. The DMK candidate, Ganapathy Rajkumar, is actively campaigning. Rajkumar, a former AIADMK mayor and district secretary who joined DMK in 2020, is known for his significant contributions to the party's growth in the region. On the other hand, AIADMK has announced Singai Ramachandran as its candidate for Coimbatore. Known also as Ramachandran Govindaraj, he was appointed as the Secretary of the Information Technology Branch by the late Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and is now the IT wing.

Looking at past election results provides context for the current political landscape. In the 2019 General Election, the alliance including AIADMK and BJP secured only 31% of votes in Coimbatore, while the DMK-led alliance received 46%. Notably, the alliances have changed since then; AIADMK and DMDK are no longer part of the BJP-led coalition.
