Ahead Of Women's Day, Tamil Nadu Rolls Out QR Code Safety System For Auto, Taxi Passengers - How It Works

Ahead of Women's Day, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister has launched a QR code-based emergency response system in Chennai. The groundbreaking movie enhances passenger safety, especially for women and vulnerable groups.

The Chennai Metropolitan City has rolled out a QR code-based identification system for auto-rickshaws, taxis, and other public vehicles. This initiative aims to ensure safer travel across the city by leveraging technology for real-time monitoring and emergency response.

Ahead Of Women s Day Tamil Nadu Rolls Out QR Code Safety System For Auto Taxi Passengers - How It Works

The system, introduced by the Chennai Metropolitan Transport Corporation (CMTC), assigns a unique QR code to each vehicle. These codes, prominently displayed behind the driver's seat, allow passengers to access crucial information about the vehicle, its owner, and the driver. With 89,641 auto-rickshaws operating in Chennai-including those from neighboring areas like Kanchipuram and Thiruvallur-the initiative covers a vast network of public transport.

How It Works

Passengers can scan the QR code using their smartphones to verify the vehicle's details. In case of an emergency, they can press an SOS button integrated into the system. This triggers an alert to the Vandana Varunagara Call Centre, which immediately notifies authorities with the vehicle's location, driver details, and passenger information. Additionally, passengers can dial emergency numbers like 112 to confirm their identity and seek help.

One of the standout features of this system is its real-time monitoring capability. If an SOS alert is activated, the call center can track the vehicle's movement and coordinate with nearby police stations to ensure a swift response. This is particularly beneficial during late-night or early-morning travel, when safety concerns are heightened.

Integration with Ride-Hailing Services

The initiative doesn't stop at auto-rickshaws. The Chennai Metro Rail Corporation has integrated the QR code system with popular ride-hailing services like Rapido, Ola, and Uber. This means that any SOS call made through these platforms will also be forwarded to local police stations, enabling authorities to monitor the journey and intervene if necessary.

A Comprehensive Safety Net

The QR code system is more than just an emergency tool-it's a comprehensive safety net for all passengers. For women, children, and families traveling in the city, it provides peace of mind by ensuring that help is just a scan or a button press away. The initiative also benefits drivers, as it fosters trust and accountability in public transport services.
