Zomato Rebrands as 'Eternal': What Deepinder Goyal Says About Company’s Unexpected Path

Food and grocery delivery platform Zomato announced on Thursday that it will officially rebrand as "Eternal" and revealed a new logo. This change comes more than two years after the Deepinder Goyal-led company began using the name internally.

In a letter to shareholders, Goyal shared that the board has approved the name change and requested shareholders' support for the move. "If and when it is approved, our corporate website will transition from zomato.com to eternal.com, and our stock ticker will shift from ZOMATO to ETERNAL. Eternal will encompass four major businesses - Zomato, Blinkit, District, and Hyperpure," Goyal explained.

Reflecting on the company's journey, Goyal recalled how Foodiebay transformed into Zomato 17 years after its founding in 2007, becoming the first Indian startup to join the Sensex. Zomato made its debut on the BSE Sensex on December 23 of last year.

"This journey has created significant wealth - not just for me, but for our employees, investors, and shareholders," Goyal wrote. "But I didn't start Zomato to make money. I started it because I wanted to do something meaningful with my life. One weekend, I went around town, collected takeaway menus, and uploaded them onto a website - simply to help. I never thought it could become a business. I wasn't seeking revenue, just trying to be useful."

'Eternal' Used Internally for Two Years

Since acquiring Blinkit, Zomato had been using "Eternal" internally to distinguish between the company and its app. Goyal stated that they had planned to publicly rebrand when something beyond Zomato became a significant driver of their future. With Blinkit now a major part of their portfolio, Goyal felt the time was right.

"We would like to rename Zomato Ltd. to Eternal Ltd.," Goyal added. "Eternal is a powerful name, and to be honest, it scares me to my core. It's a tall order to live up to. 'Eternal' carries both a promise and a paradox. True permanence isn't built on bold claims of invincibility or the swagger of success."
